The Collapse of Access as a Business Model

「アクセスを持っていること」がビジネスにならなくなる

Core thesis

When access stops being scarce, the intermediary must become infrastructure.

アクセスが希少でなくなったとき、中間組織はインフラにならなければならない。

芸能事務所に異変、倒産が相次ぐ

東京商工リサーチ · https://www.tsr-net.co.jp/data/detail/1203163_1527.html

  • Tokyo Shoko Research reported that talent-agency bankruptcies in Japan reached 26 in 2025 (January–December), the highest count since 2014.
  • The same report counted 12 further bankruptcies from January through July 2026.
  • On 5 August 2026, Sato Kikaku and related company Largo Music received bankruptcy commencement decisions from the Tokyo District Court. Combined liabilities were reported as ¥219.92 million.
  • TSR records that Hashino Emi and Higashi Takahiro of TAKE2 had previously belonged to Sato Kikaku, founded in 1985.
  • TSR describes a shift in industry structure: television production budgets have been reduced, while talent can increasingly promote and work through SNS and online distribution without relying on an agency.
  • TSR also reports that a September 2025 Japan Fair Trade Commission guideline stated that talent independence and transfers should, in principle, be permitted.

Do not frame as

Television decline is causing talent agencies to go bankrupt.

Not this

  • This is not a news article about talent-agency bankruptcies.
  • This is not a claim that talent agencies are disappearing.
  • This is not “television decline, therefore agencies fail.”
  • This is not an investment recommendation, and it does not rank surviving firms.

STRUCTURAL SHIFT

OBSERVATORY INTERPRETATION

The traditional agency business was built on privileged access.

Talent → Agency → TV / Film / Record / Advertising → Audience.

The agency controlled access to distribution.

Digital platforms changed this relationship.

As access becomes less scarce, access itself becomes less valuable.

The intermediary does not necessarily disappear. Its value changes.

Function

REPRESENTATION

Who we know.

INFRASTRUCTURE

What the individual cannot do alone.

Value

ACCESS

Who we know.

CAPABILITY

What individuals cannot do alone.

Representation → Infrastructure. The agency moves from an organization that gets work to infrastructure that supplies capabilities an individual cannot hold alone.

NETWORK CHANGE

Old access chain

  1. Talent
  2. Agency
  3. TV / Film / Record / Advertising
  4. Audience

Talent can reach audiences directly

  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Instagram
  • Streaming
  • Live
  • Brands
  • Direct fan communities

Old power concentration

  1. TV / Studios / Labels
  2. Agency
  3. Talent
  4. Audience

Power is no longer concentrated in a single gatekeeper. Talent can keep multiple parallel dependencies. The surviving intermediary moves upward in the value chain: from distribution access to production, capital, risk absorption, IP, brand, trust, infrastructure.

MARKET SIGNAL

ACCESS IS DEFLATING

Network access was once a scarce commercial asset. Digital platforms reduce that scarcity. Businesses whose primary value is gatekeeping become structurally vulnerable.

ネットワークへのアクセスは、かつて希少な商業資産だった。デジタル・プラットフォームはその希少性を減らす。門番であることが主価値の事業は、構造的に脆くなる。

  • Publishing

    Writer → Publisher → Bookstore → Reader

    Writer → Platform → Reader

  • Music

    Artist → Label → Radio / CD → Listener

    Artist → Streaming / Social → Listener

  • Entertainment

    Talent → Agency → Television → Audience

    Talent → Platform → Audience

HUMAN RESERVE

AI may not eliminate talent agencies. It may compress them toward the HUMAN RESERVED layer.
